Between 1987 and 1992 the percentage of couples who cohabited before marriage increased from 43% to 50% for African Americans, from 30% to 47% for whites, and from 30% to 38% for Mexican Americans. Currently, more than 40% of women between 15 and 44 have cohabited, and about half of all first marriages are preceded by cohabitation between partners (Casper and Bianchi, 2002). The increasing popularity of cohabitation may have benefited or undermined the aggregate level of marital quality in the population.
Studies consistently show that individuals with divorced parents are more likely than individuals with continuously married parents to see their own marriages end in divorce (Amato, 1996; Bumpass, Martin, and Sweet, 1991; Feng, Giarrusso, Bengtson, and Frye, 1999; Glenn and Kramer, 1987; Wolfinger, 1999). Similarly, studies show that individuals with divorced parents report less marital happiness, more marital problems, and greater marital conflict (Glenn and Kramer, 1987; McLeod, 1991; Tallman, Gray, Kullberg, and Henderson, 1999).
Presumably for these reasons people who marry early report an elevated number of marital problems (Amato and Rogers, 1997; Booth and Edwards, 1985) and are more likely to see their marriages end in divorce (Bramlett and Mosher, 2002; Bumpass, Martin, and Sweet, 1991; Heaton, 2002). The trend for young adults to postpone marriage, therefore, may have improved the aggregate level of marital quality in the population. We cannot be certain of this conclusion, however, because many young adults who postpone marriage choose to cohabit instead, and cohabitation may have negative consequences for the quality of subsequent marriages.
